Like the other two population centers on the Barú Peninsula (Santa Ana and Barú), Ararca originated over 300 years ago as a settlement of Afro-descendant maroons who fled enslavement during the colonial period, seeking refuge in mangrove areas.
Among its many attractions are the mangrove ecosystem and its possibilities for bird watching and other local fauna such as iguanas and crabs. In addition, Ararca is also part of the famous stone kiln route and the magnificent complexes of haciendas and camps where, during the colonial period, quarries and kilns operated for the production of lime, bricks, and other materials used in the construction of Cartagena.
