The largest public market in Cartagena is, in addition to being a center for the supply and collection of food and other merchandise, a true cultural and life experience of Cartagena's idiosyncrasy. Until the early 1960s, the traditional market was located in the Getsemaní neighborhood (in the area of what is now the Convention Center), but following its partial destruction in the “Great Fire” of 1962, the need for its relocation began to be discussed. This relocation was ultimately carried out in 1978, at its current site.

Cartagena's main commercial exchange center.  In addition to food, everything from herbs to music and electronics are sold. It has traditional food stalls.
