The Caño Juan Angola is a body of water that covers approximately 10 hectares, with a length of more than 4 kilometers and an average depth of 2.76 meters. It is a body of water that is essential for the preservation of Cartagena’s ecosystem, as it not only interconnects with lagoons and wetlands, but also serves as the natural habitat of mangroves—especially black mangrove, as well as red mangrove. Given its importance and in an effort to combat the constant threats of pollution, the canal is currently the subject of a preservation project.
Caño Juan Angola connects the Ciénaga de la Virgen with Lake Cabrero. It is navigable, allows for birdwatching, and offers an ideal route for observing the vegetation, especially the mangrove.
