This beautiful colonial style house owes its name to the fact that it was the first residence of Simón Bolívar in the city of Cartagena. In 1812, while living there, he wrote the famous Manifesto of Cartagena. In Cartagena it is said that those who lived there after Bolivar's death were getting rid of and even burning some of the liberator's belongings and original furniture of the house for fear of his ghosts. In fact, the house was in ruins until it was restored by the Banco de la República after Cartagena was declared a heritage city.

It currently operates on a permanent basis as a cultural and artistic venue for exhibitions, events and conferences. It is also a museum-library (hosting documents of Bolivar's campaigns). Throughout its history, the house has been the venue for famous literary gatherings in the city, a library and a stage for cultural presentations, among many others, due to the suitability of its spaces, such as its large central courtyard, a natural stage for recitals, theater presentations and small concerts.
