La Boquilla owes its name to its geographical position, since it is located on a sand bank that communicates with the Caribbean Sea through a series of channels called bocas. In its long stretches of beach, of more than 200 meters, coexist the traditional fishing activities of the inhabitants of the neighborhood (at dawn), water sports such as kite surfing and more than 40 restaurants, which offer traditional dishes with coconut rice and fish.

Although it is attached to Cartagena, La Boquilla is actually a corregimiento (a small town without its own mayor's office) of Cartagena. Traditionally a fishing area, it is located in the so-called northern zone (Vía al Mar, the road toward Barranquilla), where an entire new district of luxury vacation condominiums has been developed.

La Boquilla retains much of the essence of a traditional fishing village and also has an impressive marsh and mangrove area.

Small alleys connect the beach with the town center, where there is a sports field, a cultural center and other infrastructure where several films have been shot.
