It owes its name to the church of Santo Domingo. It is home to Fernando Botero's emblematic sculpture "La Gorda Gertrudis", one of the most popular sculptures in the city, as legend has it that if you touch her breasts, you will have lasting love affairs. The square is characterized by its lively nightlife and is one of the most touristic spots in Cartagena.

Surrounded by colonial buildings, it has several restaurants and bars with tables outside. On one of its sides stands the emblematic Santo Domingo Convent, dating back to the 16th century, whose structure extends to the adjacent Santo Domingo Cloister, now home to the Spanish Cooperation Training Center.
