Officially called Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de Santa Catalina de Alejandría, the construction of this Catholic temple began in 1577, on the site of a humble church made of wood and straw. However, it was not until well into the 17th century (1612) when it could be finished because, in the middle of this process, in 1586, the temple was partially destroyed by the English pirate Drake and his men, in their invasion and plundering of the city, which also led to the construction of the walls.
Designed by Simón González, taking as reference basilicas of Andalusia and the Canary Islands. In the Herrenian style, marble altar and stained glass windows. Plain Corinthian style columns with buttresses and former arches.
Active temple. Mass schedules:
Monday to Friday 10 am and 12 pm
Saturdays 12 pm
Sundays 10 am, 12 pm and 7 pm.
