The cemetery in the traditional Manga neighborhood is a Catholic cemetery that is more than 200 years old. It is said to have been the first non-military structure built after independence, and for this reason, in aesthetic terms, it reflects the influence of so-called Republican architecture, seeking to distance itself—architecturally as well as culturally and politically—from everything the Spanish Crown and the colonial period represented. Since 2023 it has been part of the National Network of Heritage Cemeteries.

Traditional families of the so-called Cartagena high society, martyrs of independence, and emblematic figures of Cartagena’s culture—both traditional (Manuel Zapata Olivella) and popular (Sayayín)—as well as Colombia’s first (and only) Black president: Juan José Nieto Gil, are some of the illustrious people who rest in the cemetery.
