Known as the most densely populated island in the world, Santa Cruz del Islote is especially impressive from the air, where you can see how not a single meter is left unbuilt. It is an island without beaches of approximately one hectare of extension that has more than 150 houses and about 800 inhabitants (in the absence of an exact census). Due to the lack of space, most of the houses have two floors, and the streets are really narrow, sometimes you even have to walk through people's houses to get from one place to another. Water, gas, gasoline and any foodstuffs are brought to the island by boat.
Artificial island. The crime rate is practically nil, in fact, it is considered the safest town in Colombia. Bustling and full of life. Its narrow streets serve as a playground for children and adults, who are often seen playing dominoes outdoors and listening to loud music.
- Electric service is only activated during the night.
- Only reachable by sea.
- There is a hostel and some houses are rented for lodging.
- It is common to stay on nearby islands such as Isla Múcura.
- The most common way to get there is by boat from the department of Sucre, Gulf of Morrosquillo, municipalities of Tolú or Coveñas (about 45 minutes).
- The distance from Cartagena is longer: 2 to 3 hours by boat.
