The Institución Universitaria de Bellas Artes y Ciencias de Bolívar -UNIBAC, is the first public university focused on arts, design and communications in the department of Bolivar. It is located in the former convent of San Diego, founded in 1608 and declared of national cultural interest. It was the seat of the Franciscan Recollects and has been used for different purposes such as Nautical School, Prison and Psychiatric Unit, before becoming the seat of the University in 2007. This building of more than 400 years of history is in an excellent state of preservation of its roofs and architecture and completely modernized in its facilities.
The main entrance to UNIBAC is located in the traditional Plaza de San Diego. Famous for its sale of handicrafts and fried food, surrounded by restaurants and bars, this small and beautiful square is a peaceful corner of Cartagena from which you can see the facade of the Convent of the University and the Convent of Santa Clara, today one of the most renowned luxury hotels in Colombia.
