It owes its name to the fact that the place was the scene of the proclamation and signing of the Act of Independence of Cartagena from the Spanish crown in 1811. The Palace, former seat of the Governorate of Bolivar, was built towards the end of the 17th century and recently, in 2019, completely restored. One of the sides of the square is the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria. The square is adjacent to Bolivar Park.
The former seat of the Bolívar Governor’s Office—still the name by which Cartagenians refer to both the building and the square—the palace continues to function as an alternate office of the Governor.
The Palace is a three-story building with wide corridors, balconies and terraces overlooking the sea, modernized with elevators.
An auditorium with stalls and upper box with capacity for approximately 300 spectators.
Regular venue for concerts and cultural events.
Located just 150 meters from the main access to the historic center by Torre del Reloj / Plaza de los coches.
